Part 1 of this post will focus on Local Governments in Ireland.
Each individual local government is separate from the Department of Local Government and one another to show that each is an independent body, with their own budget and responsibilities.
List of Local Governments: Largest
- Dublin City Council
CEO- Owen Keegan
The largest local government with 63 councillors, a population of over 527,000 and a population density of 4,486 km.
- Fingal County Council
CEO- Paul Reid
Another large local government based in the capital, with 54 councillors and a population of almost 274,000. A population density of 605 km.
- Cork County Council
CEO- Tim Lucey
With 32 councillors and a population of almost 400,000 Cork County Council is one of the largest local governments outside Dublin. It has a population density of 54 km.
List of Local Governments: Medium sized
- Cork City Council
CEO- Ann Doherty
Cork City Council has 31 councillors and a population of almost 120,000. It also has a population density of 3,010 km.
- Clare County Council
CEO- Tom Coughlan
Boasting 28 councillors and a population of just over 117,000. With a population density of just 34 km.
- Waterford City& County Council
CEO- Michael Walsh
Waterford City& County Council has 31 councillors but a population of just under 114,000. It also has a population density of 61 km.

- Carlow County Council
CEO- Dan McInerney(acting)
Carlow County Council has 18 councillors and a population of just over 54,000. It also has a population density of 61 km.
- Longford County Council
CEO- Tim Caffrey
Longford County Council also has 18 councillors but has a population of just over 39,000, with a population density of 36 km.
- Leitrim County Council
CEO- Frank Curran
Leitrim County Council is the smallest local government, with 18 councillors and a population of just over 31,000. A population density of just 20 km.
Ranking of Departments
- Department of The Taoiseach
The government department of the Taoiseach based in Government Buildings, in Dublin. Created in 1937, the main role of the Department is to support and advise the Taoiseach in carrying out various duties.The Department has a pivotal role in acting as a link between the President, the Taoiseach and other Departments of State.
2. Department of Defence
This Department was founded at the first meeting of The Dail in 1919. This Department is responsible for preserving the peace and security in Ireland, it is led by The Minister for Defence who is assisted by one other Minister.
3. Department of Justice & Equality
This Department was also founded in 1919. It is led by The Minister for Justice and Equality who is assisted by two Ministers of State. The department’s mission is to maintain and enhance community security and to promote a fairer society in Ireland.
4. Department of Finance
Founded in 1919, this Department is led by the Minister For Finance who is assisted by one Minister of State. The Department of Finance is responsible for the administration of the public finances of the Republic of Ireland and all powers, duties and functions connected.
5. Departments of Public Expenditure & Reform
This Department was established in 1919. It is led by the Minister for Public Expenditure and reform who is assisted by one Ministe of State. The Department took over the functions of Public Expenditure from the Department of Finance.
6. Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade
Founded in 1919, responsible for promoting the interests of Ireland in the European Union and the wider world. The head of the Department is the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade who is assisted by two Ministers of State.
7. Department of Social Protection
Founded in 1947, the mission of the department is to promote a caring society through ensuring access to income support and other services, enabling active participation, promoting social inclusion and supporting families. It is led by the Minister for Social Protection who is assisted by one Minister of State.
8. Department of Children & Youth Affairs
Founded in 1956, the Department is led by the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs. The Department is responsible for Children & Youth Affairs.
9. Department of Health
Founded in 1947, the Department’s mission is to “support, protect and empower individuals, families and their communities to achieve their full health potential by putting health at the centre of public policy and by leading the development of high quality, equitable and efficient health and personal social services.” The Department is led by the Minister for Health who is assisted by four Ministers of State.
10. Department of Education & Skills
This Department was founded in 1921, it is led by the Minister for Education and Skills who is assisted by one Minister of State.
11. Department of Agriculture, Food & The Marine
Founded in 1919. The mission of the Department is to lead the sustainable development of a competitive, consumer focused agri-food sector and to contribute to a vibrant rural economy and society. It is led by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine who is assisted by one Minister of State.
12. Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport
Founded in 1959, this is a Department of the Government of Ireland that is responsible for transport policy and overseeing transport services and infrastructure. The Department is led by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport who is assisted by two Ministers of State.
13. Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources
Founded in 1921, this is a department of the Government of Ireland that is responsible for the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors and regulates, protects and develops the natural resources of Ireland. The head of the department is the Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources who is assisted by one Minister of State.
14. Department of Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation
Founded in 1919. It is led by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation who is assisted by two Ministers of State.
15. Department of Arts, Heritage & The Gaeltacht
Founded in 1977. It is led by the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs who is assisted by two Ministers of State.
